Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about home organizing with Shelf Control in Lucerne.

1. I need help getting organized in Lucerne/Central Switzerland – how does it work?

In a free intro call we clarify which rooms or areas of your home you’d like help with, what your current situation is, and how I can support you. You then book a package of the right size and we find a date together for me to come to you and support you in putting our plan into practice.

2. Who is home organizing for?

For anyone who feels uncomfortable in their home and doesn’t know where to start. It doesn’t matter how big the place is or how much chaos there is. I work with families, singles, older people, people in the middle of a move, as well as people for whom order is a particular hurdle because of neurodivergence or mental health challenges.

3. Which area do you work in?

Mainly Lucerne and Central Switzerland (roughly within 30 km). For larger projects, or on request, further afield too.

4. Should I be embarrassed if my home is a mess?

Absolutely not. I don’t judge. I’ve seen a lot and I enjoy a challenge. My work is discreet and respectful.

5. Do you clean my home as well?

No – that’s a different service. I help with sorting things out and setting up a new order. Which does make cleaning considerably easier afterwards. If dusty corners turn up while we’re organizing, that’s completely normal and no problem at all.

6. Do I have to be there while you organize?

Yes. Home organizing works best together, and it has a lot to do with decisions. We work through: what do you still need? What matters? How do you actually behave day to day? None of that is mine to decide for you. I lead, support and ask questions, but you make the decisions.

7. How long does a project take?

That depends on the scope. A single session is 2–8 hours. Larger projects (a whole home or a cellar, for example) are split across several appointments. If it helps, we can also arrange a follow-up a few weeks later to look at what worked well and what didn’t, and optimise from there.

8. Does the order hold up after your visit?

That’s my aim. I develop systems that fit your everyday life, otherwise the effect doesn’t last. I also offer follow-up conversations so the new order stays in place.

9. What happens to the things that are sorted out?

We work that out together. A lot can be donated, sold or passed on. I know the local options in Lucerne and help with organising it. Whatever really can’t be used any more is disposed of properly.

10. How can I arrange an intro call?

Easiest by email or through the contact form on this website. I get back to you within 24 hours on working days, by phone too if you’ve given me a number.

11. Are there gift vouchers?

Yes! A Shelf Control voucher is a personal and valuable gift. We can work out in a free conversation which voucher suits the person best, or you can book a package directly and note in the booking that it’s a gift.

12. Does health insurance cover the cost?

Basic insurance doesn’t – organizing coaching isn’t a mandatory benefit. There are, however, three routes through which some relief is possible: Ergänzungsleistungen (supplementary benefits), Hilflosenentschädigung (helplessness allowance) and – depending on the policy – outpatient supplementary insurance. The next two questions go into these.

13. I receive Ergänzungsleistungen (supplementary benefits) – is help with tidying covered?

Partly, yes. The Ausgleichskasse Luzern (WAS) classifies organizing coaching and help with tidying as domestic help and reimburses CHF 25 per hour, up to 16 hours a month – which comes to around CHF 4,800 a year. You cover the difference to my hourly rate yourself; it’s relief, not full funding. If you already have other domestic help, it counts towards the same limit.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Get a certificate from your GP. Required for people under 80, and it has to explicitly state that help with tidying is necessary.
  2. Ask me for a cost estimate.
  3. Submit both to the WAS Luzern and wait for approval.
  4. Only then start the sessions.
  5. Submit the invoice with the number of hours itemised.

Step 3 before step 4 is the crucial part: anyone who starts without approval carries the risk themselves. The WAS Ausgleichskasse Luzern provides information via the EL hotline.

14. And Hilflosenentschädigung (helplessness allowance) or supplementary insurance?

Hilflosenentschädigung: you can use this freely – for organizing coaching too, without approval and without proof of use. Where the impairment is solely psychological, however, entitlement to accompaniment in everyday life requires that you receive an IV (disability insurance) pension.

Supplementary insurance: many outpatient supplementary policies include a benefit called «Haushalthilfe» (domestic help). The conditions depend on the product, but two points come up again and again: a doctor’s prescription is needed, and what’s reimbursed is usually a flat daily rate rather than an hourly one – often between CHF 50 and 100 per day for a maximum of 30 days a year. Ask your own insurer about «Haushalthilfe». If you already receive IV benefits, the social counselling service of Pro Infirmis Lucerne advises you free of charge.

What I contribute: a cost estimate before we start, in the form required for a funding commitment, an invoice with the number of hours and a description of the work, and the free 15-minute intro call to clarify things in advance.

15. Does your dog come along?

No – as a rule I don’t bring her, unless you’d expressly like me to.
